Started school at age 6, Darcy, 2 room grade School, Cleburne County, Piney Township, located about 7 miles south of Heber Springs Arkansas on highway # 5.  At age 7 the family moved to the Sam Bradford farm located on Little Red River about 4 or 5 miles east of Heber Springs. Shortly after moving to this farm their house burned and the family moved in temporally with a neighbor, Ed Bedwell.  

 The family then rented a small house from Will Biddle, about one mile east of the Bradford farm and his father,  Howard Crosby continued to farm as a share cropper on the Bradford place.  After one year the family then moved another mile east to the Louis  Adams farm, about one mile from Libby. The family stayed there only one year.  During these two years on Red River William attended a one room log cabin school house known as[ Lick Skillet ] ( Mt Zion ) was the formal name. 

 The family then moved back to the top of the mountain when William was 9 years old and Harold Leon, born on the Adams farm was one year old.  They moved to the Hugh and Anne Mae Hannah farm located on route #1 about 1 mile east of highway 5 and Darcy school.  William returned to Darcy school and finished the 8th grade then started high school at Rose Bud High, located about 7 miles south of Darcy school. Times were very tough in those years and he had to pick cotton to buy school clothes and save every penny possible to purchase school books. During grade school years he and most other children would go bare foot as long as possible into the fall months to save their shoes for cold winter times. A pair of shoes was about $1.95 but no one had the money and it was very hard to come by.  His mother used flour sacks to make underwear and work shirts. A company would market the flour in percale cloth,  beautiful patterns,  which looked great and made nice clothes. His dad would also cut firewood and haul it into town to sell to buy shoes and other family needs. When William was about 7 to 9 years old he would hoe corn and cotton for anyone who would hire him for 50 cents a day, sunup to sundown. The going price for an adult was one dollar ($1.00 ) per day.  

 After finishing the 10th grade at Rose Bud AR, william left home 1944 at age 17 and went to Memphis Tn. He was so happy to leave the farm and bad times that he had experienced in Arkansas. A neighbor loaned him $12.00 to buy some clothes and train fare to Memphis. The money ran out but not before he landed his first job, he still had to send for more money from his neighbor to carry him to his first pay day. First job was with Rail Way Express as a clerk then Firestone Tire and Rubber Co as a truck tire builder. Both jobs were either swing or graveyard shifts. While working nights in Memphis he attended high school during the day.  

 Left Memphis 1946 and moved to Portland Oregon where he harvested walnuts and filberts then found a job as tree faller and logging employee in various camps in and near Newberg Oregon and other nearby areas. 1949 moved back to Portland Oregon  where he worked as insurance salesman, custom tailored clothing sales, both women and men, and various other sales jobs. He also worked as a radio announcer and disk jockey in Vancouver Wa. During and in between these sales jobs he also worked as a meat cutter for Safeway Stores.  

He remained at the radio station and fronted his own dance band until 1953 when he was inducted into the U S Army as a Chief Food Technician and served in and around Portland Or until 1955 when he received an honorable discharge. After discharge from the Army he went to work for U S Dept Of Agriculture as a plant grader of Eggs, Poultry, Turkeys and egg products in Portland Or then was transferred to Salem Oregon  then on to Petaluma, Ca where he stayed only 6 months and then to Los Angeles, Ca as a terminal market grader in 1959. On the GI Bill education program he took electronic engineering training but never really worked at it other than to service radios and television sets as a part time endeavor. His promotions with the USDA came fast so he never really worked in the field of engineering. 

About 1962 was promoted to Assistant  Federal State Supervisor then to Federal State Supervisor about 1964.  In this position he supervised plant graders in southern California and  the state of Arizona. 1971 was promoted to supervisor of all California and Arizona and transferred to Sacramento Ca. In this position he supervised about 250 employees, federal, state and county personnel.  1979 was transferred to the Regional Office located in Modesto Ca where he remained until retirement from Federal Service in 1983.  During his tenure with U S Department Of Agriculture he was awarded several awards for Public relations and outstanding service.

 1984 purchased a small stock brokerage office in Sacramento Ca and ran it until 1990 then sold it to one of his co workers. he started buying real estate as an investment in 1979 and bought and sold several pieces of property. He owned several parcels of land in the Sierra foot hills which he subdivided and sold. During the year of 1996 he sold 7 of his rental  houses.  William received some land in Arkansas from his parents estate then purchased more from his brother for a total of 80 acres.  He continued to live in Sacramento California after retirement.  The story goes that he retired 3 times but it's doubtful if he ever really retired. He became very interested in genealogy and did much work in collecting information on his and his wife's families plus he designed a web site and posted all his genealogy data for the world to see and enjoy. 

 William had a deep love for boats and the water, especially the ocean. He had owned several sail and power boats over the years, even built a V bottom boat while living in Portland Or. He owned several sail and power boats, 26 foot sail, 21 foot power, 28 foot power, 30 foot sail, 43 foot motor sailer, 24 foot power and a 18 foot fishing boat.  His first sail boat, a 26 foot Columbia which he and his family sailed in the ocean out of Long Beach, Ca. 

He was advised in 2000 that he had developed prostate cancer and was treated with external radiation which apparently cured it. 2001 he suffered several heart attacks and had open heart surgery performed, quad bypass which was very successful.   

As of 11/15/2006 he has 5 children living, 1 dead, 15 grandchildren living, 1 dead, 7 great-grandchildren living plus 2 more soon to be born.
