Notes for SIMON CROSBY:
Ernest Howard Crosby, In the portion of the family history taken from the October New York Genealogical and Biograpical Record, Surmises that Simon Crosby 'may have come to America as one of the company of the Rev. Thomas Shepard, who crossed the ocean in that year (1635) and settled at Newtown, now Cambridge, Massachusetts. This Mr. Shepard was preceeded or accompanied by a large number of his freinds and acquaintances. He had taken orders in the Church of England, and had held livings in Yorkshire and Northumberland, but he enertained conscientious scruples regarding the ceremonies of his church, and was consequently so harassed by those in authority that he left England, and became one of the most eminent clergymen in New England. The Cheif reason for establishing Harvard College at Cambridge is that he lived there.'
This record goes on to state that before the end of 1635 we find Simon Crosby living at Newtown (Cambridge). He was admitted as a freeman on March 3, 1636 and chosen as a selectman in the fall of that year. In September of 1637 he was elected surveyor of highways; was selectman again in 1638, and in October of that year was elected constable.
On Dec. 5, 1636 land was granted to him and six others for pasture. He died in Cambridge in September 1639, at only 31 years of age. The cause of his death is not known, but we can surmise that his death may have been fairly sudden, since he died intestate. An addendum to Ernest Howard Crosby's record quoted above says that the orginal inventory of the estate of Simon Crosby, signed by his widow Anne, is on file in the archives of Massachuetts at Boston. It places the value of his property at 433 pounds.
Holme-on-Spaulding-Moor, in York Co., England is an extensive |Parrish located 15 miles SE of the city of York.
Simon and his wife came over in the ship "Susan and Ellen."
Notes for ANNE BRIGHAM:
It is from Thomas 7, the firstborn, that our line descends, but before proceeding to his generation, it may be of interest to record some of the facts of the later life of the widowed Anne Crosby. In 1646 or l647, she married the Rev. William Tompson, aa distinguished clergyman in Braintree (now Quincy), Mass., who apparentlly pursued his religious duties with zeal but with little regard for financial gain. Ernest Howard Crosby's record says that in Aug. of 1652 she sold the Crosby house4 with six acres adjoining, and also 147 acres of land in the neighborhood. Mr. Tompson's health was finally undermined 'by melancholia', and he retired from preaching in 1659. He died in 1666, leaving his family in straitened circumstances. In 1668 Anne petitioned the General Court, complaining that moneys due her for his services were witheld. She died in 1675 and was buried in the Quincy churchyard. We have no record of what became of her daughter Ann, her only child by Mr. Tompkins.
At this point, it may be as well to record what is known of two other brothers, both younger than Thomas:
Simon Jr., born 1637, moved early in life to Billerica, Mass. and was the first innkeeper in that town. He was Representative in the General Court in 1691, 1697, and 1698. (Indications are that it is from him that the Alonzo Crosby descent is traced.)
Joseph, the third son, is the ancestor from which Ernest Howard Crosby descends. Born in 1639, he was just 7 months old when his father, Simon the Emigrant, died. When his mother remarried, he was taken by her to live with his stepfather's family. He passed his life there as a farmer, but was always prominent in town affairs, frequently serving on committees.
Children of SIMON CROSBY and ANNE BRIGHAM are:
11. i. THOMAS11 CROSBY, REV, b. 26 Feb 1634/35, HOLME, YORK, ENGLAND; d. 27 Jun 1702, BOSTON, MA..
ii. SIMON CROSBY, b. Aug 1637, CAMBRIDGE, MA.; d. Unknown.
iii. JOSEPH CROSBY, b. Abt. 1639, CAMBRIDGE, MA.; d. Unknown.
Generation No. 11
11. THOMAS11 CROSBY, REV (SIMON10, THOMAS9, ANTHONY8, THOMAS7, MILES6, JOHN5, SIR PIERCE4, SIR ODO3 DE CROSBY, SIR SIMON2, SIR CHARLES1) was born 26 Feb 1634/35 in HOLME, YORK, ENGLAND, and died 27 Jun 1702 in BOSTON, MA.. He married SARAH FITCH (OR SNOW ?). She died Unknown.
Notes for THOMAS CROSBY, REV:
Emigrated 8 weeks old , grauated from Harvard in 1653, had 12 children and Alonzo Crosby's records show that his brother Simon married a Rachel Bracket; despite the difference in spelling, it may be that the brothers married sisters.
Thomas 7 Crosby, was born at Holme-on-Spaulding, was brought to Boston in 1635, and in1655 he was engaged by the church in Eastham, Mass. to conduct public services on the Lords Day.
I now quote from A CROSBY FAMILY LINE compiled by Emerson Crosby
Kelly "He was a 'religious teacher,' not a pastor; this difference carries a nice distinction. He filled the position for fifteen years, altough he never was ordained as a minister. Subsequently he became a merchant in Harwich. Mass, and wrote several religious books."

JOHN CROSBY.
This settler was probably the son of Simon and Mary (Nickerson) Crosby of Harwich, Cape Cod, baptized April 13, 1701, in that town. He came here about 1732 and married, before 1734, Sarah Luce (53), probably through the family relations between the two families established in 1704 by the marriage of his aunt Ann to William Luce (9). His father-in-law gave his wife a farm of twenty acres near Tashmoo in Chickemmoo, and they resided there for the remainder of the time covered by our present knowledge of his life. It would seem that his wife died at some time unknown, and he remarried in 1752 a Mrs. Sarah Tisk [This name is as written in the @Tisbury vital records. It is probably an error for Fisk.] and that he was living here in 1758, signing as a witness on that date.

Notes for ELIZABETH HOPKINS:
Elizabeth Hopkins, born April 21, 1711, Died Aug. 6, 1801, was a daughter of Nathaniel Hopkins and Mercy Mayo. Nathaniel was a son of Stephen Hopkins, a grandson of Giles Hopkins, and a great grandson of Stephen Hopkins who landed at Plymouth from the Mayflower. His child was the only one born on the Mayflower, and his will was witnessed by Captain Miles Standish and Gov,. William Bradford.
Gladys Taber, in her book "My Own Cape Cod" mentions the Giles Hopkins homestead in Orleans, at the crook of Cape Cod. She states that Giles was born in 1610 in England, was a Mayflower passenger, and founded the Hopkins family on Cape Cod. In the same book she also has a picture of the historic Joshua Crosby home in Tonset on Cape Cod. He commanded a quarterdeck gun on the frigate constitution in a sea battle with the guerriere in the war of 1812. We do not know the family connection, although it is possible that he was a nephew or perhaps a cousin to the next generation of our line.
Emerson Crosby Kelly's history states that the Mayflower line has been established and accepted, so all the descendants of Thomas 9 Crosby and Elizabeth Hopkins are potential members of the General Society of the Mayflower descendants.

Notes for THOMAS CROSBY:
Emerson Crosby Kelly's history states that the Mayflower line has been established and accepted, so all descendants from Thomas 9 Crosby and Elizabeth Hopkins are potential members of the General Society of
Mayflower Decendents.
With Thomas Crosby of the ninth generation we are now tracing, the scene now shifts to New York state, and it is in this generation that the Mayflower connection is made. I will quote extensively from the
Emerson Crosby Kelly record, Published in 1957: "Thomas 9 Crosby, born at Brewster, Mass., baptized Aug. 19, 1705, immigrated with
relatives to Putman, New York, where he died at Northeast on Dec. 13, 1781. The N.Y. Genalogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 1, says,
'Between the years 1740 and 1755, quite an extensive colony of families
from Cape Code settled in the eastern part of what is now Putman County (formerly Duchess), New York. Among these settlers was Thomas
Crosby, who came fron Barnstable County, Mass., in 1753, And settled in the present village of Carmel.... The Drew Female Seminary
And The old Gilead Burying Ground are on this farm. The fact that Mr.
Crosby from a state of comparative affluence became suddenly reduced
to poverty may thus be explained. Many of the first settlers took up
farms under title from the Indians, and did not recognize the claims of
the Philpse family, who were the owners of the patent granted to Adolph Philipse in 1697, Such settlers were aftrewards ejected from there farms,
and Thomas Crosby was probably one of them. In 1776 this same farm was granted a perpetual lease by Frederick Philipse to James Dickerson,
and it is described as 'formerly in possession of Thomas Crosby.' "
This Thomas 9 Crosby, 1705-1781, married on August 9, 1733, and his
bride was a decendent of an illustrious man who came over from England
on the Mayflower. Elizabert Hopkins, born April 21, 1711, died
August 6, 1801, was a daughter of Nathaniel Hopkins and Mercy Mayo. Nathaniel was a son of Stephen Hopkins, a grandson of Giles Hopkins,
and a great-grandson of Stephen Hopkins who landed at Plymouth from the Mayflower. His child was the only one born on the Mayflower, And his will
was witnessed by Capt. Standish and Governor William Bradford.
See Orrin B. Crosby's file for more imformation.

Lot is listed on the 1774 census of RI in the town of Scituate. He is also in Scituate in the 1782 RI census under the name Soll Crosbee. In 1790 he is listed on the census of Montgomery Co, NY --town of Otsego. The Otsego Co. History, pg 159 mentions him as one of the earliest settlers in the town, a sea captain, who came from RI and purchased some 600 acres of land east of Hartwick village. some of his descendants remained in the county in 1882. Lot an Margaret are both in the Hartwick Cemetery Records by Nellie Balcom --1976. He is listed in the register of American Rev. Vets. of the town of Hartwick, Otsego Co. NY -- Jim Brown 5/26/95
Notes for MARGARET MERRY:
[Simon.ftw]
There is some doubt that this Margaret Crosby is the wife of Lot Crosby. We know from IGI records that Margaret Crosby was the mother of these 8 children but no father was listed there. We know that John Crosby b 3/7/1769, her son was born in Martha's Vineyard and Tisbury is on the Island of M.V. If Margaret Crosby is the same as Margaret Merry who married Lot Crosby then their marriage date in 1760 was one year before the birth of her first child, Sarah. Her children are listed IN IGI and her husband's family is listed in Banks 1966, p. 120.

Notes for THOMAS CROSBY:
Emerson Crosby Kelly's history states that the Mayflower line has been established and accepted, so 'all the descendants from Thomas 9 Crosby and Elizabeth Hopkins are potential members of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
Thomas 10 is our ancestor, but before taking up his life story we will note briefly that one of his brothers, Enoch, was famous. Emerson Crosby Kelly quotes from a book printed in 1896, "A History of Danbury, Conn.: "Enoch Crosby, who is generally believed to have been the original of Harvey Birch, the hero of Cooper's famous novel The Spy..... became apprentice to a shoemaker in Kent and faithfully served his term of service.............(During the Revolution) Noble Benedict, a resident of Danbury, aglow with patriotic fervor, started to raise a company of soldiers......The first man to respond to his call was Enoch Crosby, a shoemaker. He subsequently became locally famous as a spy, operating in Putnam and Dutchess Counties, New York, where were a number of Tory organizations. He was instrumental in the capture of several companies of these enemies of the government." After the Revolution Enoch farmed, dying at 85.
Continuing with Thomas 10, we follow again Emerson Crosby Kelly's narration:
"Thomas 10 Crosby, born Feb. 3, 1752 in Brewster, Mass., was taken at the age of one year by his parents to Putnam County, N.Y. In 1766 the family lost its farm as previously explained. About the time of the outbreak of the Revolution, Thomas and his wife, Rebecca Bishop, settled near Meriden, Conn. Within a short time they moved to the eastern section of Delaware County, New York, town of Middletown, near the present hamlet of Kelly's Corners. The reason for this can only now be conjectured. A fire destroyed the town hall at Putnam County, and all the early records of the town were destroyed then, sometime before 1773. Perhaps Thomas decided to settle in new territory where his land was not likely to be taken from him. Perhaps he was a pacifist or Tory sympathizer. Rather than take part in the bloody struggle, he secreted himself away in the Catskill mountains, away from his brother, Enoch, 'The Spy'. There, in that allmost uninhabited section, he was harmless and safe from war as he farmed the stony hillsides and fathered thirteen children."
Further research on this point might be rewarding. The Crosby family History, from the American Genealogical Research Institute (1978) states that Thomas was a private and did 'patriotic service in New York,'
See wife Rebecca for Thomas 10 Crosby's will.

A picture of Parker Crosby remain among the Marion County, IA., Crosby decendents along with letters written by his son Orrin B Crosby 12 to his son Wilbur Crosby 13 who moved to this area in 1869. These letters contain references to events and places from this time to 1900. One article was of paticular interest mentions , "Doctor Howard Crosby is a cousin to my grandfather, and resides in New York City. He is a getting up a history of the Crosby family. He sent Uncle Charles a leaf out of Enock Crosby's docket book when he was a justice of the peace in Westchester County in 1805." Letter was dated Dec. 15, 1885 From Lanesville, NY. Orrin was 73 year old at the time of this writing and its the opinion of this writer that Orrin knew his great grandfathers-mothers name, this also would have been Dr Howard's unckle and his wife (Thomas Crosby 9 1705-1781 and his wife Elizabeth Hopkins 1711-1801]. This family record matches with " A CROSBY FAMILY LINE" cheifly concerning Benjamin Lewis Crosby 1797-1893 of Halcott Center, Green County, NY compiled by Emerson Crosby Kelly, MD Albany 8, NY 1957.
